While I trained as a developmental biologist and molecular geneticist, I always had a keen interest in evolutionary questions – namely, in comparative developmental biology, or EvoDevo. I am interested in how developmental processes change over evolutionary timescales, to give rise to the phenotypic substrate for natural selection to act upon. In particular, I investigate how changes in gene regulation can pave the way for such alterations, in embryonic and post-embryonic development, and to what extent such alterations are even possible - that is, “developmental plasticity” versus “developmental constraint”. Given the recent rise in single-cell genomics technologies, we are now able to address these questions at the level of the basic biological unit of life, the individual cell. Accordingly, we can start to disentangle the relative importance of cell-intrinsic and -extrinsic factors in determining this balance between “plasticity” and “constraint”, and how external environmental factors might contribute to it in an EcoEvoDevo context.
