Location and Time of the lecture

The 1-hour lecture takes place on Tuesdays from 09:15-10:00 alternatingly in the small lecture hall (kleiner Hörsaal) of the Vesalianum (Vesalgasse 1, first floor, enter the main building) for the lectures, and in the Salzburger Seminar room (Room E0.07, Vesalgasse 1, ground floor, enter the main building) for the discussions. The first lecture will take place on Tuesday, 27. September 2011.

Aim of the lecture

The aim of the lecture is to give a detailed introduction to the origin, maintenance and diversity of sexual reproduction and the resulting selection mechanisms between males, females and their offspring (e.g. mating conflicts, sexual conflicts and family conflicts).

You should have previously attended the lecture 'Entstehung des Lebens und Evolution' of Prof. Ebert.

  • evolutionary origin of sexual reproduction
  • costs and benefits of sexual reproduction
  • diversity of sexual systems and mating systems
  • mating conflicts
  • sexual conflict over parental investment
  • kin selection and family conflicts

Examination

In order to pass the course each student has to attend the lectures, hand in questions about the mandatory reading, participate in the discussion, and pass the examination. The written examination will be held during the time of the lecture in the last week of the semester.
