Anya Theis

PhD student in the group of Walter Salzburger. Works on the evolution of Cichlids of Lake Tanganjika.

Current research

Cichlids of the tribe Haplochromini have a special breeding behaviour: the female lays the eggs in a pit and snaps them up into the mouth to breed them there for a few days. The males are carrying conspicuous egg-spots on the anal fin, which have an important function in courtship and spawning behaviour. I want to examine if there is a difference in attractiveness, mating success and fertilization rates between males (Astatotilapia burtoni) with natural and altered egg-spots.

...and else?

My favorite leisure activity is to travel around the world! Other hobbies are dancing ballet, taking pictures, diving,...
